What Is a Mini Forest?
A mini forest, also known as a micro forest or tiny forest, is a densely planted community of native trees and shrubs in an urban or suburban site that is designed to mimic the structure and function of a natural forest. This concept is based on the Miyawaki method, which emphasizes the use of dense plantings, diverse locally-native species collections, soil preparation, and multilayered design to mimic the complexity of a native forest.
Why Plant a Mini Forest?
Mini forests may be small in size, but their environmental and social impact is big. These compact green spaces deliver powerful ecosystem services, including:
- Increasing biodiversity and providing habitat for wildlife
- Improving air quality and reducing air pollution
- Helping reduce stormwater runoff and prevent flooding
- Cooling surrounding areas and reducing the urban heat island effect
- Offering mental health benefits through increased access to nature
