Heat pumps can be a cost-effective way to heat and cool homes while reducing climate pollution.

This interactive tool was developed by experts at the Canadian Climate Institute to accompany the research in their 2023 report, Heat Pumps Pay Off. The calculator was designed to compare the cost of heat pumps to other home heating and cooling options in five cities across Canada based on information that was up to date as of fall 2023.

Since the release of the report, some policies that impact the cost comparisons have changed, such as the removal of the consumer carbon price, the end of the federal Greener Homes Grant, and the introduction of new provincial incentive programs. Any policy changes or new programs launched after fall 2023 are not reflected in the analysis.

The tool was also updated in March 2024. More technical detail is available here.
